Mauricio Pochettino is confident Harry Kane will play again this season although he refused to put a possible date on his recovery.

Kane damaged ankle ligaments in the 4-1 win at Bournemouth last weekend and Tottenham have confirmed he will not return to first-team training until next month.

Yet Pochettino reassured England supporters worried about whether he will be ready for the World Cup by expressing certainty that he would be back in a Spurs shirt before the end of the campaign.

“Yes, of course, yes,” said Pochettino. “It’s not a long-term injury. But the reality is that reality is now he's in his crutches and his boot and we need to assess him day by day and we'll see the reaction of his ankle.

“We want to recover him as soon as possible and the professionals here are focussed on helping him try to recover. We cannot put a day or date on him starting to participate in training with the team. That is the first step, the second step is for him to build his fitness.

“He was positive after the game. His character is always to be optimistic. He's positive and now he's trying to be focused on recovering as soon as possible.

“We're happy because he's so positive and when you see a positive player it always helps us too, to believe he can be ready again to compete as soon as possible. If it not a long term injury, it's easier to keep your form and that helps you to be fit quicker when you fix your problem.”

Some Tottenham supporters believe Kane will be ready for the match at Chelsea on April 1 but that would require an extremely rapid recovery as he was expected to be absent for around a month.
