Harry Kane is capable of succeeding Alan Shearer as the Premier League’s record goalscorer, according to Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Kane is on track to retain the golden boot he won last season, and has 68 goals in 108 matches in England’s top flight.

While that total is still some way short of Shearer’s tally of 260, Pochettino believes Kane has the time on his side, and the hunger, to overtake the England great.

"Our wish is that he gets close to Shearer, who was one of the best, an unbelievable player," said Pochettino. "Why not?

"Harry is still very young with the potential to improve a lot, so why not, one day – even though we are talking about an unbelievable player like Shearer.”

Kane was this week named the Premier League player of the month for February and has eight goals in his last four matches in all competitions.

Pochettino added: "He is playing very well and scoring goals, which is fantastic.

"The award shows that the team is doing well, too.

"I am happy for him and the team because we have had good results in the last few weeks. Harry fully deserves it.

"He is one of the best strikers in Europe and he is showing that he can still improve.

"He is very young and his mentality is to try to improve every day and work hard to be better in every game and every season."
