Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford has hit back at a report on his investment in five properties alongside references to his campaigning for free school meals.

Rashford took to Twitter and screen-grabbed a story that was published in the Mail on Sunday and appeared on MailOnline, under the headline: “What a result! Campaigning football star Marcus Rashford has bought five luxury homes worth more than £2million.”

The article reports Rashford has “ploughed an estimated £1.5m into three houses on a new estate in Cheshire” as well as “buying a house and flat in Macclesfield”.

Rashford, who was awarded an MBE in October for his work to end child food poverty, took to took to Twitter to respond to the article in question.

“Ok, so let’s address this," he posted. "I’m 23. I came from little. I need to protect not just my future but my family’s too. To do that I made a decision at the beg of 2020 to start investing more in property. Please don’t run stories like this alongside refs to ‘campaigning’."

Rashford followed that up with another tweet which read: "Anyway, in nicer news, I’ve been working on a project for months now behind the scenes and I can’t wait to share it with you all next week.

“It’s something I’m really proud of and something I feel our children need. Best get back to work on it. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!"

Last year, Raheem Sterling accused some sections of the media of helping to “fuel racism” with their portrayal of young black footballers in a post in which he referenced two stories on MailOnline about his Manchester City team-mates Tosin Adarabioyo and Phil Foden.

Posting on Twitter alongside a screengrab of the article on Rashford, Gary Lineker said: “Here they go. This is how they start. Subtle to begin with, but it will grow. It’s what they do.”

Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy tweeted: “This is pathetic. There is no contradiction between investing your earnings and using your platform to campaign against child poverty.  We should celebrate Marcus Rashford as an inspirational role model to young people on and off the pitch.”
