Man Utd join 'not a cell phone in sight' craze... and instantly regret it!

There are many things wrong with modern football.

From the the vast amounts of money and squabbling over TV rights, right down to goal music, pre-match light shows and clappers - the beautiful game certainly isn't without its flaws.

But perhaps the worst of all ills to plague modern football is the number of supporters set on filming every set piece in the hope they'll capture a moment to 'show the grandkids'.

Sky Sports have got this, guys. They're also showing the action in 4k Ultra HD - and from multiple angles - so best to pop your iPhone 5S (eight megapixels, don't you know) back in your pocket and take in the experience.

That was the message from Manchester United's Twitter team on Wednesday when they harked back to simpler times, joining the latest meme sweeping social media.

Alongside an image of Jesse Lingard celebrating his equaliser against Arsenal, the club tweeted: "Not a cellphone in sight, just people living in the moment."

Fine? Fine. Until you remember this is Old Trafford, and finding a picture of supporters celebrating a goal without a mobile phone in shot is a feat bordering on impossible.

And so Twitter swiftly - and gleefully - set about circling each and every handset in shot.

James Preston responded: "I see at least two."

Evan Kaloudis said: "False. Dude by the corner flag. Your club cannot even meme properly!"

I think this one might have backfired, guys.
