You can't win the Premier League title in September... but you almost certainly lose it.

Liverpool have kicked off their title challenge with maximum points from their opening seven games of the season to sit top of the table on 21 points.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds leads current champions Manchester City by five points, and it will take some doing to reel in the Anfield club this season.

In contrast, Manchester United's season could well have reached a high on the first day of the campaign - and that 4-0 Old Trafford win over Chelsea is already a distant memory for many a United fan.

Since that victory on August 11, United have picked up just one more win, drawing three times and losing twice - the latest setback a 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal after leading at half-time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's second-half strike cancelled out Scott McTominay's fine opener, and the result leaves United 10th in the table and trailing Liverpool by 12 points after just seven games.

According to Opta, United's total of nine points from their opening seven league games is their lowest at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1989-90.

With Leicester City and even West Ham making an early play for Champions League qualification, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will have to improve considerably if they want to finish in the top four.
