Outgoing Ander Herrera has urged Manchester United to follow Liverpool's example as they bid to become a major force in England once more.

Herrera, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2014, is expected to join Paris Saint Germain this summer after deciding to call time on his United career.

The 29-year-old won two domestic cups at Old Trafford and a Europa League medal, though he failed to help steer Manchester United back to the Premier League summit during five years with the club.

And Herrera believes the patient rebuild at Liverpool should serve as a blueprint for rivals United in their pursuit of a first Premier League crown since 2013.

“The club will need time, confidence and support,” Herrera said.

“I am sure they will give it but the only thing I ask for them is time because this is not easy.

"There are examples. Liverpool are probably going to win the Champions League but I am leaving this club and they [Liverpool] haven’t won one title in five years I have been here.

"They have done incredible work but the fans have given them time. That’s what this club needs at the moment.”

And the 29-year-old believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to lead United back to the top.

The United manager enjoyed an impressive stint as interim boss at Old Trafford, leading the club to an historic Champions League victory over PSG while reviving their top-four bid domestically.

Solskjaer was handed the United reins permanently in March, signing a three-year contract, but their form has since faltered.

However, despite just one point from their final two League matches against relegated sides Huddersfield and Cardiff, Herrera insists Solskjaer can return United to their former glories.

He added: “I really believe in Ole and I really believe in Michael [Carrick], Kieran [McKenna], Mike Phelan and Demps [Mark Dempsey] too, but I think there is a tough job ahead.

"That is my opinion as a fan and as someone who knows the club at the moment."
