Jose Mourinho joins Tottenham: 'The Special One' confirmed as Spurs manager after Mauricio Pochettino sacking

Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as Tottenham's new head coach following the sensational sacking of Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday evening.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy took the decision to sack Pochettino following a poor run of results this season, ending the coach's five-and-a-half years at the club.

Spurs have moved quickly to replace Pochettino, with former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Mourinho appointed hours later on a deal until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Speaking on his appointment, Mourinho said: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Talks between Spurs and Mourinho progressed steadily last night, and the club have now confirmed that the 56-year-old Portuguese will be the next man in the hotseat.

Mourinho arrives with a world-class pedigree for delivering silverware, with Pochettino's inability to secure a single trophy at Tottenham eventually counting against him when Levy had a decision to make.

Mourinho has won the Premier League title three times in two different spells as Chelsea coach, while his early spell at Old Trafford - winning the Europa League and Carabao Cup with a limited United squad before guiding them to second during the 2017/18 season - will not have gone unnoticed by Levy.

'The Special One' has, of course, enjoyed trophy-laden spells elsewhere, winning the Champions League with both FC Porto and Inter Milan, and domestic titles in every single league he has managed in.

Despite his (slightly tarnished) reputation as one of the world's best coaches, Mourinho will have to prove to doubters that his style of play and combustible style are the right fit for Tottenham - especially after being sacked by both Chelsea and United within the last four years.

And while Mourinho may no longer be a favourite among Chelsea fans, his past at Stamford Bridge may count against him among supporters of one of their fiercest rivals.
