Pep Guardiola delivered a half-time wake-up call to Manchester City as they turned up the heat on Liverpool with a 3-0 win at Huddersfield Town on Sunday.

Few expected rock-bottom Huddersfield to cause champions City any problems at the John Smith's Stadium, especially with David Wagner departing as their head coach in midweek.

Danilo's deflected effort gave City the lead after 18 minutes, but Guardiola looked distinctly unimpressed as the half wore on with City looking listless despite Huddersfield's obvious weaknesses in defence and attack.

City came out after the interval with a point to prove as goals from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane - struck within three minutes of each other - wrapped up the game as a contest after 56 minutes.

After the game, Sane revealed Guardiola was not enthused by their first-half display and reminded his players to reassert themselves on the restart.

Sane told Sky Sports: "I think everyone could see in the second half we played quicker, had better position and we controlled the game really well.

"(Guardiola said) we can't play the way how we played in the first half. If they scored at 1-1 then it would have been difficult to win the game.

"That's why he woke us up a little bit to play our game again quicker, better and helped us with the spaces."

Danilo, who scored the opener, added: "The important thing is the win. I'm happy for the goal, for sure, it helped the team so we have to push and keep going that way."
