Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola says Lionel Messi will have the last word on a possible transfer from Barcelona next summer.

Messi told Barca in August that he wanted to leave the Catalan club this year, but eventually announced he would be staying at Camp Nou.

However, it remains a possibility that the Argentinian will leave the club - where he spent the last two decades of his career - when his contract expires next summer.

"I think I don't have to explain anything," Guardiola said on Friday of City's interest in a move for the 33-year-old this year.

"Leo explained quite well his feelings, I don't have anything to add.

"He's a football player for FC Barcelona, the club I love, and there is nothing more to say."

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner has one year left on his contract with Barca and, as things stand, would be available on a free transfer.

Asked if City could move for the Argentine next year, Guardiola said: "I don't know.

"It's a question for Leo Messi. I cannot talk about the intentions of other people."
