Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United would be challenging Chelsea in the race for the Premier League with better performances at Old Trafford.

United snatched a late win at Crystal Palace to secure their fourth win on the road this season and ensure they remained in step with Tottenham and Manchester City in the race for a Champions League place.

Mourinho's side are six points off the top four and a further seven points off Chelsea, who lead the way, and Mourinho believes that the gap to the top would be significantly smaller had United been more clinical at home.

The Red Devils have won just three of eight home games this season and were held at Old Trafford by Stoke, Burnley, Arsenal and West Ham.

"We are doing enough for that (to be in the top six)," said Mourinho after the 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park.

"If we had the points we lost at home with draws in matches that we did more than enough to win we would be close to the top of the league.

"But we lost these points and in this moment we are just closing the gap to the top four positions, so let's try.

"There are three more matches until the end of the year and let's see how it ends on December 31 and we can feel then and smell what is possible to do in the second part of the season."
