Manchester United Women have marked their first appearance back in league football with a 12-0 win over Aston Villa Ladies.

In their first match since joining the FA Women’s Championship, formerly the FA Women’s Super League 2, Casey Stoney’s side laid down a marker to the rest of the league with a stunning result at Boldmere St Michaels FC.

United let 6-0 at the interval with Jessica Sigsworth bagging a hat-trick before half-time.

The 23-year-old added another two in the second-half with Lauren James and Kirsty Hanson grabbing a brace each with Katie Zelem, Mollie Green and Ella Toone also getting on the score sheet.

United have played two matches prior to today’s league opener in the FA Continental Tyres League Cup, suffering a narrow defeat to Reading before securing an impressive win over Liverpool.

The 12-goal winning margin this afternoon eclipses the record set by United’s men side; a 10-0 victory over Anderlecht in 1956.

United ended a 13-year absence from the senior women’s game when they entered the second tier of league football this season.
