Manchester United may be just two games into their season but they are already facing what could be the most critical test of Louis van Gaal’s tenure.

After a season-long absence from the Champions League United return to the competition tonight, taking on Belgian side Club Brugge in the first leg of their qualifying round. Win and the riches of Europe’s premier competition await.

But should United fall to the underdogs van Gaal will be facing perhaps the most damaging crisis of his spell at Old Trafford. The manager is well aware of the importance of this fixture, admitting yesterday that “of course” it is the most significant he has had at the three-time European champions.

With a near fully-fit squad the Dutchman should not feel too concerned ahead of a tie against a Club Brugge side missing nine first teamers. Yet the pressure of these games has undoubtedly gotten to major sides in the past, with Napoli, Celtic and Lyon having suffered surprise eliminations in recent years.

Will United hold their nerve? Or will Club Brugge pull of an almighty shock? Find out by following our coverage below
