Louis van Gaal has admitted Barcelona winger Pedro Rodriguez possesses the qualities that Manchester United are looking for in a new forward.

Pedro is believed to be close to securing a transfer to Old Trafford after Barca technical secretary, Robert Fernandez, said on Wednesday the Spain international had told the club he wanted to leave.

Pedro - who scored an extra-time winner in Barcelona's Uefa Super Cup victory over Sevilla in midweek - later revealed he did not want to depart the Camp Nou but confirmed he was seeking regular first-team football.

And despite reported interest from Manchester City and Chelsea, Van Gaal has remained coy on United's desire to sign the winger, but the Dutchman admitted Pedro had the kind of pace he was searching for.

When asked about a prospective transfer for Barcelona's World Cup winner, Van Gaal said on Thursday: "You have to ask Pedro, not me.

"My answer is it’s a process - a club, a player and we are there also. I don’t mention anything to you until he has signed. Then I come to you and say ‘Pedro is here’.

"But it’s still not the case and we shall wait and see."

When then questioned whether Pedro was the kind of pacey, direct forward United were looking for, Van Gaal replied: "Pedro is a player like that so write it!"
