Rio Ferdinand has expressed his doubt over the possibility of Sergio Ramos leaving Real Madrid for either Manchester club.
In a video on his Youtube channel Ferdinand suggested that recent rumours placing him in a head-to-head battle between City and United could be part of an attempt by the Spanish defender’s management team to improve his contract at Real Madrid.
Responding to the speculation that Manchester City have joined the race for Ramos Ferdinand said: “Well he was going Manchester United the other day. Now he’s going to City, the agent’s fine, he’s doing well. The management team are putting him with two of the biggest clubs in terms of financial power.”
The 29-year-old has two years left on his deal at the Bernabeu and reports have said that the defender has said he wants to leave the club. However Ferdinand is not convinced that a £28.5 million bid from United will lead to Ramos’ departure.
“I just still can’t see it, I think he’ll stay at Madrid,” Ferdinand added. “He’ll play alongside [Raphael] Varane or Pepe next season. They’ve got three top centre-backs there. For them to let him go, unless they’ve got another Varane coming through that we don’t know about, I can’t see them letting him leave.
“It’s a lot of money to spend on a guy who is 29 with no resale value, so it’s a huge, huge deal. But why would he go to Manchester City ahead of Manchester United? I don’t understand it.”
