Women's Super League leaders Manchester City say they support the decision to curtail the rest of the 2019-20 season, despite the fact that it could see them miss out on the title.

The FA WSL and Championship Board announced on Monday that remaining fixtures had been cancelled with immediate effect, a decision it said was taken “in the best interests of the women’s game” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

No decision has yet been made on how or whether the title will be awarded, though a series of undisclosed recommendations have been passed to the FA Board.

City were a point clear of second-placed Chelsea when the shutdown began, but having played a game more, could end up losing the title on a points-per-game basis.

A club statement said: "Manchester City Football Club now await the outcome of discussions regarding the final standings of the league table.

"Whilst disappointed that we are unable to complete the season, we understand the complexities of the situation and support the FA's decision."

Meanwhile, Casey Stoney, manager of rivals Manchester United, also gave her backing to the decision.

"It's obviously disappointing not to be able complete the season, but it is the right decision for the safety of everyone involved,” the former England international said.

"Our focus now moves to our development for next season, which we have been continuously planning for throughout the year, and we can't wait to be back on the pitch again when it is safe to do so."
