Mamadou Sakho believes that the winner of Liverpool’s upcoming match against Manchester City will be best-placed to claim this season’s Premier League title.

The Reds sit four points clear of Sunday's visitors, but Manuel Pellegrini's side have the luxury of two games in hand over the league leaders. But victory for Liverpool will place their destiny in their own hands.

And Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Sakho acknowledged that Sunday’s game would be the most important match for the Reds since they last won the League title in 1990.

He said: “Of course this could be the biggest match Liverpool have played in 24 years.

“You win three points but it’s worth a lot more. It is a match that will place the winner in the best position to win the title.”

Sakho added that he always thought the Liverpool squad had the potential to win the league after his arrival at Anfield last summer.

He said: “Ever since I arrived at the club, I said it. I told my team-mates that we are capable of winning the title.

“We have the quality and we just have to believe it. And – voila! – as the season progressed we saw Liverpool grow in strength playing such beautiful football.”

Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League two points clear of Chelsea. They have a four point cushion over Manchester City but the Sky Blues have two games in hand over both of the clubs above them.
