West Ham midfielder Luis Boa Morte played his first game in eight months last night as he made his return from a serious knee injury.

The Portuguese, who was hurt during a pre-season match against Tottenham in Beijing, played the first half of the reserves' 4-1 defeat away to Wolves.

The club said: "It was a planned substitution and our medical staff were satisfied with how he came through what was a competitive encounter."

However, there is no indication yet if the former Arsenal and Fulham midfielder will play any part in West Ham's fight to avoid relegation.

Boa Morte had a hand in the Hammers goal — scored by Sergio Sanchez — but could not prevent defeat to a much more experienced side featuring seven internationals.
