Louis van Gaal has hinted at the imminent arrival of Angel di Maria, and criticised Manchester United’s lack of creativity.

The United boss, speaking after his side’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Sunderland, remained coy about the Di Maria deal, but his frustration at his team’s lacklustre performance was clear.

On the Argentinian winger, Van Gaal told Sky Sports that he “liked” the player, and said he felt the same way about fellow United target Arturo Vidal of Juventus.

But he made clear it would be the club, not him, who confirmed the deal.

Speaking about his side’s performance against the Black Cats, the Dutchman said: “In the last third, we lacked creativity.

"The purpose of the game is to make more chances and score goals - we didn't do that.

"We missed too much passing, the tempo was out. In my opinion, that's the reason for the result.”

It is understood that the Old Trafford club will announce the Di Maria deal in the coming days, as they attempt to inject fresh life into a team that has picked up just a solitary point from its first two games.
