Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool? Bayern chairman Rummenigge confirms midfielder will NOT sign new contract

Thiago Alcantara will not sign a new contract at Bayern Munich this summer, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed, with the Spaniard now expected to leave the club.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool of late, with just one year remaining on the 29-year-old's Bayern deal.

Standard Sport understands a move to Liverpool is currently unlikely, though a move could be possible should one of Jurgen Klopp's current midfield options leave, which cannot be ruled out as Gini Wijnaldum's contract talks continue to drag on.

Rummenigge has revealed Thiago - who signed for Bayern from Barcelona back in 2013 - has held positive talks with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, but ultimately confirmed no deal could be reached.

"The conversations Hasan had with him [Thiago] were always very productive," Rummenigge told Sky Sport in Germany. "And at some point it actually seemed that [a deal would be agreed].

"But then Thiago informed Hasan that he would like to do something new again, and so it is. We will have to accept that.

"We have a contract that is still valid for one year and if he agrees with any club and that club should pay a transfer of a certain amount.

"I don't want to make any public comment about the amount that we have in mind. Then we will deal with it, but we will not, as I have already said, hold a summer sale."

Rummenigge also insists there are no hard feelings between the club and player, acknowledging that - from a financial perspective - an imminent deal would suit both parties better with Thiago approaching 30-years-old.

"I'm not angry at all, I like him," he added. "I think he's a great footballer, a fine footballer and he's a good character too.

"And one shouldn't forget either: At 29, he is at an age where, if he wants to do something new, he has to do it now because if you are in your 30s, it will be more difficult to make transfers."
