Liverpool have confirmed that they have placed staff impacted by the ongoing suspension of Premier League football on furlough.

With professional football in the UK postponed indefinitely, the Reds have taken steps to secure jobs for the future by making use of government aid.

However, they will pay all staff 100 per cent of their salaries during this period - above the state-backed 80 per cent figure.

The move follows on from Friday’s confirmation that all Premier League clubs will ask their playing staff to take a 30 per cent cut in pay during the coronavirus pandemic.

Further to that, Liverpool are paying their casual matchday workers for each fixture that has been postponed.

The Merseyside club are also offering help to staff forced to work from home through a newly launched online portal.

The portal features information on maintaining health and wellbeing as well guidance from the first-team sports psychologist and head of nutrition.

Friday’s league-wide statement reiterated all clubs’ commitment to finishing the 2019-20 season, although only when it is “safe and appropriate to do so”.

That is good news for Liverpool, who held a 25-point lead at the summit of the top-flight prior to football shutting down.

The Reds were just two wins away from securing a first league title in 30 years until the Covid-19 outbreak halted their charge.
