Marc Mayo26 December 2022

Liverpool are without James Milner and Roberto Firmino as they face Aston Villa this evening.

A hamstring issue led to Milner being withdrawn early from the Carabao Cup defeat at Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp has confirmed the 36-year-old will miss the next couple of games. A calf injury keeps Firmino out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is fit and starts after suffering from illness in recent days, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also in the side following his own virus. Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are the centre-back pairing for the return of Premier League action.

Liverpool are without Ibrahima Konate, who is due back in training on December 27 following the World Cup final.

Jordan Henderson returns to the starting XI, with Klopp saying he has not seen the World Cup having “a massive effect” on those who featured in Qatar.

Luis Diaz (knee), Arthur Melo (thigh) and Diogo Jota (calf) are long-term injury absentees, though Curtis Jones is nearing a return.

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago; Salah, Nunez, Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Subs: Kelleher, Gomez, Keita, Elliott, Tsimikas, Carvalho, Phillips, Bajcetic, Doak
