Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been ruled out for up to three weeks with a hamstring injury.

The midfielder was forced off in the 80th minute of the Reds' 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

A stretcher was initially called for the skipper, but Henderson walked off the pitch unaided before heading down the tunnel for treatment.

Jurgen Klopp has now confirmed that Henderson, who underwent a scan on Friday, is facing a short stint on the sidelines.

Henderson will begin that spell out of the team when Liverpool continue their Premier League title bid against West Ham United at Anfield on Monday.

The Englishman's participation in the return leg against Atletico has also been thrown into doubt by the results of his scan.

"It could have been worse," Klopp told reporters on Friday.

"How we all know, it was a hamstring thing, and we’ve heard of different hamstring injuries around the Premier League - Harry Kane, for example - it’s not that bad.

"But he will be out for, I think, three weeks or so, which is not cool. But, how we see it, we were still lucky."

Liverpool face West Ham, Watford, Chelsea, Bournemouth and the return leg against Atletico over the next three weeks before a possible Premier League coronation against rivals Everton at Goodison Park on March 16.

Klopp later provided an update on Xherdan Shaqiri, who has been sidelined since late last month with what was initially described as a 'minor' muscle issue.

The German said: "Not close to team training yet. We cannot put any time pressure on it. It’s a difficult one. Never a big one but always big enough to keep him out for two or three weeks.

"We just wait. He’s not in team training."
