Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to make the most of a rare opportunity to completely fill Anfield when his side face Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday.

As a result of Uefa sanctions, the Serbian champions have been banned from bringing travelling supporters along for their Champions League visit to Merseyside.

Consequently, the tickets that would have been allocated to Red Star have instead been sold to home fans, with the club ring-fencing a section of those seats especially for supporters aged between 17 and 21.

Asked if he had experienced a similar situation before, Klopp joked: “When I was a player, I played in empty stadiums - they were not banned they were only not interested in the football we played!

“A stadium full of only one crowd… I have never experienced.”

And the German went on to call for those inside Anfield to give everything in support of a team who are still getting to grips with life back in Europe’s premier cup competition.

“The support in England is different, especially in Anfield it’s different, we don’t sing against another crowd,” he added.

“It’s a little bit like that but it’s more you follow the game and support your team and, if we have a bigger number, cool.

“That’s of course not nice for the people from Belgrade but we have no influence on that. We would have had no problem if Belgrade fans would have been here, we still would have had a fantastic atmosphere.

“But [it’s] all about that we are really together tomorrow because we are the same, it’s not that we are the most experienced team in the Champions League because last year we came to the final.

“We are still pretty fresh in comparison to a lot of other teams in the competition and we have to make sure that this on advantage that we can have in our home games - our crowd - is there 100%.

“That’s what we should make sure. I’m pretty sure we are ready but a little reminder for all of you: on your toes!

“Then, it will be difficult for Belgrade and that’s the first job to do - to make it difficult and uncomfortable for the opponent.”
