Dejan Lovren has completed a €12m (£11m) permanent transfer to Zenit St Petersburg.

The Croatian defender ends a trophy-laden six-year stint with Liverpool in order to join the reigning Russian champions.

He has signed a three-year deal with Sergei Semak’s side.

Lovren first joined the Reds from Southampton in the summer of 2014 and endured a difficult start to life at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers.

However, he grew in stature during the early days of Jurgen Klopp’s reign, making key contributions such as the winning goal in a memorable Europa League quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund.

He cemented himself as the preferred partner to Virgil van Dijk during the run to the 2018 Champions League final, but saw his influence wane as Joel Matip and Joe Gomez moved up the pecking order.

The last two seasons have seen the 31-year-old make just 31 of his total of 185 appearances for the club.

As such, he expressed a desire to depart Anfield in search of regular playing time.

A statement read: “Everybody at Liverpool Football Club would like to thank Dejan for his contribution over the years and wish him all the very best in his new challenge.”
