Southampton have succeeded in a last-minute swoop for Danny Ings that will see the Liverpool striker sign on an initial season-long loan with an obligation for a permanent deal next summer.

The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Saints after an £18million initial fee was agreed between the two clubs, with a further £2m worth of appearance-related add-ons included.

Liverpool have also secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause for a player whose popularity with manager Jurgen Klopp saw him granted permission to seek a move away from Anfield in search of first-team football this summer.

Ings had looked unlikely to secure a transfer as Thursday's 5pm deadline for English clubs loomed, with Crystal Palace pulling out of the running for his signature and Southampton hesitating.

However, the south-coast club submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League just in time to grant an extension until 7pm.

A transfer has subsequently been ratified, signalling the end of Ings' Liverpool career.

The Englishman endured an injury-hit spell at Anfield following a move from Burnley for a tribunal-set fee of £6.5m in 2015, with two serious knee issues restricting him to just 25 appearances and four goals.
