Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to score twice as Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield to pile more pressure on Jose Mourinho.

Sadio Mane volleyed home midway through the first half to give Liverpool the lead before a huge blunder from Alisson allowed Jesse Lingard to equalise.

But substitute Shaqiri scored twice in the space of eight minutes, with both efforts aided by big deflections, to hand the hosts a deserved victory.

Jurgen Klopp's side knew that a win would take them back to the top of the table, while Manchester United could move within five points fifth-placed Arsenal with a victory.

Liverpool dominated the early proceedings with United barely able to get out of their own half, with Fabinho and Roberto Firmino going close. And it was no surprise to see the hosts take the lead.

Firmino squared the ball to Fabinho and the Brazilian chipped a delightful ball into the path of Sadio Mane, who chested it down and smashed home on the half-volley past David De Gea.

But no sooner had Liverpool finished celebrating, United were back level courtesy of a horrific error from Alisson. Romelu Lukaku sent in a fairly innocuous cross but the Brazilian spilled it and Lingard couldn't miss the empty net.

After the break, it was one-way traffic again as Liverpool pressed for the winner but they soon became frustrated with United's deep defending, taking 30-yard shots much to Klopp's displeasure.

Then came the game-changing moment as Klopp sent on Shaqiri for Naby Keita. Within two minutes, the Swiss midfielder struck a deflected effort which hit the bar and went in.

Just six minutes later, it was deja vu as his effort from the edge of the box ricocheted in off Eric Bailly and past De Gea.

Two fortunate goals for Liverpool, but they created their own luck with a dominant, attacking display.

The result leaves Liverpool a point clear of champions Manchester City, and a huge 19 clear of United as Mourinho's season goes from bad to worse with a top-four finish now looking unlikely.

The Red Devils currently sit 11 points off fourth-placed Chelsea, and will now likely have to win this season's Champions League if they are going to qualify for next season's competition.

As for Liverpool, another big win over a fierce rival will give fans hope that this is finally their year to win the league once again.
