In March Liverpool were celebrating the finest victory of Rodgers' tenure, a 3-0 crushing of United that went a long way to putting paid to David Moyes.

Now they return in ninth, out of the Champions League and without two of their leading lights from that heady day at Old Trafford in Daniel Sturridge and, of course, Luis Suarez.

In their place, Rickie Lambert has begun to score but Mario Balotelli has underwhelmed - both drop to the bench today.

United have climbed to third off the back of five straight wins - the most since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Van Gaal, it seems, has them heading in an upward direction - but a loss today could derail that recent progress. It is, quite simply, the game of the Premier League season so far.
