Fran Kirby's timely return to satisfy Lionesses' need for creative spark

During the Lionesses’ early struggles at the Women's World Cup this summer, it was clear they were missing a creative spark.

Sarina Wiegman’s side beat China 6-1, but they scored just two goals from their other two group games and a round-of-16 clash.

The win over China came when Lauren James was deployed as the No10 and, given she will miss tonight’s game against Belgium and Tuesday’s clash with them too, the return of Fran Kirby could not be more timely.

A knee injury meant Kirby missed the World Cup. The Chelsea playmaker is back fit now and has looked sharp this season. The 30-year-old brings a wealth of experience and a style of play that brings the best out of those around her.

Kirby can go under the radar, as her movement is based on creating space for others, but she is valued by Wiegman and will be crucial in these two upcoming games.

Belgium will look to sit deep and absorb pressure, before trying to hit on the counter. The Lionesses struggled at the World Cup against teams who play in such a way and it is why Kirby will have an important role.

She has the ability to unlock defences, and the only concern for Wiegman is how many minutes Kirby can manage as she works her way back to full fitness after returning last month from a knee injury sustained in February.

England face a fight to win their Nations League group — and reach the semi-finals — after losing last time out in Holland. Belgium are top of Group A, one point clear of England and the Dutch.

Wiegman’s side will qualify for the Olympics if they reach the final. If France make the final, however, third will be enough.
