Lionel Messi conceded Barcelona were totally outclassed by Bayern Munich after last night’s thrashing at the Allianz Arena.

Barcelona’s dreams of reaching next month’s Champions League Final at Wembley are all but over following a 4-0 defeat in the first leg of their semi-final.

Messi, who claims he “felt good” on his comeback from a hamstring injury despite looking some way short of full fitness, said: “They were superior in everything.

“They were better than us, they were much stronger.

“The comeback is very complicated. Bayern are a very good team but we will try. We need to get ourselves up, try to overcome this and if we cannot then think of next season.”

Barcelona assistant coach Jordi Roura admitted the defeat was “very painful” and Spain midfielder Xavi said: “We have got to try to get to the final but we know at the same time that it is practically impossible. They were quicker than us, it was like a siege. We expected it to be like this. They are very strong physically.”

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes revealed the memories of last season’s Champions League heartache when they lost on penalties to Chelsea inspired them.

Heynckes said: “We have a fantastic team and missing out on success in the past two years has just made us hungrier to win this year. This game was a perfect example of that.”
