Diego Maradona has weighed in on modern football's enduring question - who is better out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

The 54-year-old football icon, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, believes his countryman is the better player but suggested that he was ahead of them all when it came to 'style'.

Speaking to CNN, Maradona opined: "Messi is better than Ronaldo."

When asked whether style or goals made a great player, Maradona responded: "I think the goals come with the style. I think Messi is finding his own style."

He continued: "But he is killing it with his goals! This makes you accelerate the pace - most likely he will find it very soon.

"I think that I had my own style from the very beginning. And that is the point in which I could be better than Messi. But Messi has scored 300 goals. Me I think I scored 200, more in my whole career. But the thing is my goals were more beautiful.

The full interview is on Thursday on Connect the World with Becky Anderson, on CNN International at 5pm BST/6pm CET.
