A month after bringing his Paris Saint-Germain career to an end in the Champions League Final against Bayern Munich, Thiago Silva made a rather more low-key start to life at Chelsea in their Carabao Cup win against Barnsley.

Silva was handed his Chelsea debut by Frank Lampard as Chelsea eased to a 6-0 victory that sets up a fourth-round clash with Tottenham next week.

Lampard hopes the Brazilian, who turned 36 on Tuesday, can help fix some of the defensive issues at Stamford Bridge.

Tougher tests and bigger nights lie ahead but this was a solid start for Silva as he builds up to full fitness following his free transfer.

Wearing the no6 shirt, he played as the left centre-back alongside Fikayo Tomori and was a calm presence before he was brought off after an hour as part of a pre-arranged plan.

In the end it was another Chelsea new boy, Kai Havertz, who stole the show as he scored a hat-trick to see off Championship side Barnsley.

Nights like this were not why Silva or Havertz were signed but it was still a good evening for both new arrivals as they adjust to life in English football.

After two games in a wider position, Havertz was handed the no10 role and looked a lot more comfortable in central areas on a night full of positives for Lampard.

Tammy Abraham impressed with a goal on his first start of the season as he bids to stake a claim for a more regular starting spot following the arrival of Timo Werner.

On top of that, Chelsea kept a clean sheet and there was also a debut for Ben Chilwell as a substitute.

The left-back came on late in the second half but had time to get an assist for fellow sub Olivier Giroud.
