Jurgen Klopp stresses Liverpool’s long-term planning is more important than his own future

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants to leave the club in a better state than he found it.

The German is under contract until 2024 and much of the talk has been around the idea of him leaving Anfield when that deal expires, marking nine years in charge of the club.

While Liverpool boast the kind of spending power most clubs around Europe would envy, there is little doubt they can afford to invest quite as much money as some of their rivals at the top of the game.

Indeed, their return to the European football has largely come from coherent squad planning, as well as the sheer coaching ability of Klopp himself.

Clearly, there needs to be some sort of succession planning, with former captain Steven Gerrard seemingly constantly linked with replacing Klopp, although that looks a long way off for now.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s visit of West Ham United, Klopp stressed the health of the club in the long-term was far more important than his individual future.

“The plan is still the same,” he said.

“Nothing has changed and if I decide to leave in 2024, it’ll be nothing to do with the quality of the squad. All we do is for the long term.

“This club must be even better when I am not here anymore”.
