Jurgen Klopp questioned the belief of his Liverpool players after they surrendered the lead to draw against Southampton in his first Premier League game at Anfield.

The former Borussia Dortmund coach charged from his technical area and combined an impressive leap with a fist pump as he celebrated Christian Benteke's opener in the 77th minute.

But a lapse at the back saw Sadio Mane steal in to restore parity in the final moments as Klopp was left to settle for a third successive draw since taking the reins at Anfield.

Mane was dismissed for a second bookable offence in injury time but the Reds had little time to make their advantage count and ultimately missed the chance to jump above their visitors in the league table.

"We knew it would be hard work only three days after our last game," Klopp said, with a nod to Thursday's hard-fought draw with Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.

"We had our moments and played very good in many situations but in the end you have to score."

But the Liverpool boss was disappointed to see heads drop after Southampton's equaliser, adding: "There was no belief in their eyes any more after that."
