Jurgen Klopp has labelled transfer stories linking Liverpool with a January move for Arsenal forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as "nonsense".

The 23-year-old was today reported to be the target for Liverpool after making just eight Premier League starts for Arsene Wenger's men so far this season due to fierce competition for places at Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has 18 months left on his current contract with the Gunners, but Liverpool manager Klopp today insisted there is no truth to reports which have suggested second-placed Liverpool want to buy the England international.

"I don't usually say anything about transfer rumours but I can make an exception. Nonsense," Klopp said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool's clash with Manchester City on New Year's Eve.

"This kind of thing I think a lot about but I say nothing because it is really not interesting what I think about this.

"You (the media) are already on a path so do with it what you want but from our side nothing else to say about it."

When then asked what Liverpool's plans for the January transfer window are, Klopp replied: "I thought I said everything about the January transfer window.

"My English isn’t good enough to use different words. So I say again, if we think a player can help us in January, February, March, April and May then yes we will do something.

"I’m not sure it will be important for us this year."
