Jurgen Klopp is confident the injury that forced Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk off during the victory over Southampton is not serious.

Van Dijk, who had been ever-present in the Reds’ Premier League side this season, was forced off after 55 minutes after picking up a rib injury following a challenge with former Saints’ teammate Shane Long.

Speaking after a 3-0 victory that sealed Liverpool’s best ever start to a season, Klopp revealed his centre-half initially picked up the problem before the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

“He had before the PSG game a bruise on his ribs," Klopp said.

"Today he got another hit there again and it was uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be too serious. Hopefully he’s be okay.”

Van Dijk’s substitution had no bearing on the final result, with Liverpool already leading by three goals before half-time through a Wesley Hoedt own goal and efforts from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah.

The result maintained the Reds’ perfect start to the season which has seen them win six games from six, having opened up a two point gap on defending champions Manchester City.
