Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he apologised to the fourth official for his celebrations following Diego Costa's penalty miss on Tuesday night.

The Reds failed to close the gap to the top as they drew 1-1 with Premier League-leaders Chelsea at Anfield, but it could have been worse for Klopp's men had Costa converted a late penalty.

Georginio Wijnaldum cancelled out David Luiz's superb free-kick before Joel Matip was adjudged to have upended Costa in the Liverpool penalty area.

Referee Mark Clattenburg pointed to the spot, but Simon Mignolet dived to his right to deny the Spain international, sparking wild scenes from Klopp on the touchline.

The Liverpool boss appeared to scream in the fourth official's ear as Anfield celebrated Mignolet's heroics.

And Klopp later said: “I said (to the fourth official) sorry I was a bit excited. He said no problem I like your passion.

“No-one can beat us, was what I said. Obviously that’s not true but it felt for us like this in that moment. I was absolutely the wrong person to say it.”
