Jurgen Klopp said Alisson’s cold feet may have been to blame for his two mistakes on a nightmare afternoon for the Liverpool goalkeeper against Manchester City.

In freezing conditions at Anfield, Alisson was punished for two poor clearances as Liverpool lost 4-1 and City took control of the title race.

Asked about Alisson’s errors after the game, Klopp told Sky Sports: “We cannot hide that. It is true as well that we did not give him a lot of options in those moments, especially around the first one. I think the second one, he just mishit the ball.

“I don’t know, there is not a real explanation there. Maybe he had cold feet or something. That sounds funny but it could be. But there is still the opportunity to kick it in the stands.

“Ali has saved our life plenty of times, no doubt about that. Tonight he made two mistakes, that is how it is.

“We made massive mistakes for the goals. If you make them against teams it is a problem, against City it is the killer. That is why we lost the game.”
