Jonjo Shelvey is on the attack

Brendan Rodgers is considering playing Jonjo Shelvey as a striker in tonight’s Europa League clash against Young Boys.

Victory over the Swiss at Anfield will see the Reds book their place in the knockout stages, providing Udinese fail to beat Group A leaders Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia.

However, Reds manager Rodgers is mindful of the need for Liverpool to push up the Premier League table so will rest a number of players ahead of Sunday’s match at his former club Swansea.

Luis Suarez, who has scored 13 times this season, Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling are among those who will not start tonight, so Shelvey (above) is set to be the focal point of the Reds attack. The midfielder scored twice in a 5-3 win over Young Boys in September.

Rodgers said: “I will make changes as I have to respect that we’ve got a really busy schedule.

“The other boys will be on the bench as support if we need them. We have four games in 10 days, and that’s a big ask to keep the same group of players playing in all of those. We’ll put out a team we feel can win. All being well, we’ll get the result and if the other result goes with us, we’ll have qualified.”
