John Terry has revealed Chelsea's offer of a contract extension is for a "different role" to the one he has now and indicated he wants to be given time to consider his options.
The Blues skipper was resigned to leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the season following 21 years at the club after being told in January that he would not be handed a new deal.
But Chelsea confirmed this afternoon that Terry met with director Marina Granovskaia and chairman Bruce Buck earlier in the week to discuss fresh terms.
However, although a new deal is on the table the 35-year-old, who is suspended for Chelsea's final game of the season against Leicester, is reluctant to rush into a decision regarding his future.
He wrote on his official Instagram page: "Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes.
"The contract extension the club has offered me is a different role and I hope everyone will understand I want to take the time to consider it carefully before making a decision."
Terry joined Chelsea as a 14-year-old and has spent his entire senior career at Chelsea, during which time he has won four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League.
The club's fanbase have made their feelings about Terry known in recent weeks but it now appears he is not guaranteed to extend his stay at the club even though he has received a contract offer.
Antonio Conte is set to take charge in west London this summer and Terry, who has made 24 Premier League appearances this season, could face the possibility that he will play less games during the Italian's tenure.
