John Terry is still good enough to play at the highest level, says Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink

Guus Hiddink believes John Terry will still be a Chelsea player next season, and insists the Blues captain has much to offer the club despite the defender turning 36 later this year.

Terry's future has been talked about regularly since he revealed in January that Chelsea, where he has been since the age of 14, had not yet handed him a contract extension.

After much speculation about his next move, Chelsea confirmed this week that they have offered their long-standing skipper a new one-year deal which Terry subsequently confirmed he is thinking about.

With Chelsea fans singing Terry's name throughout the club's final game of the season at home to Leicester City, which ended 1-1 on Sunday, Hiddink insists the centre-back has a lot to still offer the club and believes he will stay at Stamford Bridge for one more year.

"I'm happy that they are now in contract and they are talking. It's not for me to make speculation but I think it's good when both parties begin to talk. Personally, they will manage to come to a solution. That's my personal opinion," Hiddink said.

When asked whether he believes Terry can still play at the highest level, Hiddink said: "He is over 35 but he is still physically fit and mentally too so he can contribute a lot wherever he wants to play.

"I try to get out of everyone the best and everyone knows the cricumstances in December were poor. We managed to get out very smoothly and rapidly. You need to be a father [figure to players like Terry]."
