England would have done a lot better at last summer's World Cup if Roy Hodgson had brought John Terry back into the international fold, according to former Chelsea boss Bobby Gould.

Terry captained England across two spells but was twice stripped of the captaincy and ultimately retired from international football in 2012.

But Gould - who took caretaker charge of the Blues in 1981 - believes Hodgson should have tried his best to persuade Terry out of retirement.

"The biggest mistake Roy Hodgson made was not trying to persuade Terry to come out of retirement," Gould told the Sunday Express.

"If he'd gone round to visit Terry and asked him to go to the World Cup, England would have done a lot better."

Terry signed a new one-year deal at Chelsea on Thursday and manager Jose Mourinho assured supporters it was not a sentimental deal but based on the defender's continued 'top performances'.

Gould added: "What he has done for Chelsea has been incredulous. He's loved the manager he's working with and his role in the team.

"Terry is a very special human being and a great leader of players."
