David Moyes says Jesse Lingard will walk his way back into the England squad if he can replicate the form shown in his West Ham debut across the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old, on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season, scored twice on his Hammers debut in a 3-1 win at Aston Villa.

It was 399 days since his previous start in the Premier League, but Lingard - who last played for England at the Nations League finals in 2019 - was bursting with energy and confidence, just five days after joining the club.

England manager Gareth Southgate was in the stands at Villa Park and will find it difficult to deny Lingard a recall if that level continues.

"Jesse is still getting used to us and us to him," said Moyes. "We are thrilled because he made a difference.

"If he keeps on like that it won't be long until he is back in the England squad. He made the team better tonight.

"I felt we were short in areas where we make chances. It is proved tonight that we needed him."
