Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is happy at Tottenham and hopes to sign a new White Hart Lane deal ‘very soon’, according to his agent.
Amid summer interest from Barcelona, the 27-year-old’s representative Mustapha Nakhli would not commit to Spurs before September’s transfer deadline, but now says his client wants to stick around and help lead the club back into the Champions League.
Vertonghen admitted in July he was ‘flattered’ by interest from the Spanish giants, before holding positive talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
"We have spoken to Daniel Levy about a new contract for Jan and the negotiations were very good – we hope to sort everything out very soon," Nakhli told Sky Sports.
"He is happy at Tottenham and wants to play for the club. He wants to play Champions League with Tottenham and he has a very good feeling about the new manager.
"Last year they made many changes and brought in many new players and it was not so good but this season it is possible for Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League."
But Nakhli suggested Tottenham’s failure to reach the Champions League this season would spark another summer of uncertainty.
"Playing at the highest level is, of course, very important for Jan," he added. "If Tottenham do not qualify for the Champions League this year then we will have to see what happens next summer."
