Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has donated £2,000 towards a fund to help former teammate Lewis Kinsella recover from a serious knee injury.

Kinsella came through Villa’s academy after joining from Arsenal as a youngster and played with Grealish at various age group levels.

Now at non-league Aldershot Town, the 26-year-old ruptured his MCL in a victory over Ebbsfleet United earlier this month and requires surgery.

With money particularly tight at non-league clubs in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Kinsella said he was setting up a GoFundMe page with a target of £10,000, in order to ease the financial burden on the club after they fronted the cost of surgery.

“It has been a horrendous time for non-league clubs,” Kinsella wrote. “I would like to do as much as I can to help the club financially as they have done for me over the last 3 years!

“The donations would make a huge difference not only to the clubs finances but allowing me to see the best people to get this knee fixed once and for all.”

At the time of writing, the campaign has raised more than £3,300 towards its target of £10,000, with England international Grealish having donated a significant proportion of that.
