Is that rite - Did Gattuso learn his patter from Rab C Nesbitt?

No language barrier: Did Rino Gattuso learn his patter from Rab C Nesbitt?
11 April 2012
"When you get right down tae it, there's only birth, copulation and death. Everything else is pure bloody guesswork!" - Rab C Nesbitt

Whatever the nature of the "banter" that passed between Gennaro "Rino" Gattuso and Joe Jordan at the San Siro last night, Scots are rightly proud of their unique language.

Glaswegian patter, originating from the speech of Highlanders and Irish people who migrated in large numbers to the city area in the 19th and early 20th centuries, is as complex and humorous as any Cockney dialect.

In the 1970s, the Glasgow-born comedian Stanley Baxter parodied the patter on his television sketch show. "Parliamo Glasgow" was a spoof programme in which Baxter played a language coach and various scenarios using Glaswegian dialogue were played out for laughs.

But it was a decade later that Gregor Fisher brought a whole new meaning to the chat with his portrayal of Nesbitt, first on the TV show Naked Video and then in his own sitcom.

Gattuso, who played for Rangers in 1997-98, would clearly have understood it if Jordan had used any of the following last night . . .

Am gonni rattul yer nogen - rattle your head

Glaikit - stupid, idiot

Tumshie heed - not very bright

Bam - idiot, stupid person

Eejit - stupid person, idiot

Ya Bampot - you idiot

Ya choob - idiot

A Clype - a tattle tale

Nippet - bad tempered

Numpty - fool
