Roy Hodgson has said that if he had the opportunity to call up any past England players to his current squad he would choose Alan Shearer and Bryan Robson.

In a question and answers session organised by the mobile network EE, Hodgson was asked which previous England players he would include in his team given the chance.

The 67-year-old said: "One’s tempted to always look at centre forwards of course.

"Alan Shearer would be an obvious choice but also a guy like Bryan Robson, who I think was a fantastic captain for England and a tremendous midfield dynamo so I’d choose between those two."

Shearer, who regularly appears as a pundit on BBC's Match of the Day, played 63 games for his country and scored 30 goals.

Robson scored 26 times and made 90 appearances for the Three Lions.

Hodgson was also asked who was the toughest manager he had come up against in the dugout, he replied: "I'd have to say Arrigo Sacchi [former AC Milan and Italy manager].

"I think he revolutionised Italian football and he was a big fan of English football and based a lot of ideas on England and how English teams did in the past."
