Hugo Lloris: Tottenham waiting for 'something big' as Champions League football at new stadium awaits

1/42

Something big is lying in wait for Tottenham as they took a big step towards securing a third consecutive season of Champions League football, according to captain Hugo Lloris.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were almost written off for a top-four place during the run-in to Christmas, but a remarkable run of results against their positional rivals - capped off by on Sunday with a first win at Chelsea since 1990 - now means they are eight points clear of Antonio Conte’s fifth-placed side.

After a season at Wembley, Spurs will move to their new 62,000-seater stadium next season and - costing close to £1billion - regular Champions League football is a must.

A Dele Alli brace, and one stunner from Christian Eriksen, at Stamford Bridge saw Tottenham shrug off yet another ‘hoodoo’ this season, and the goalkeeper says they’ve closed the gap on the Premier League’s elite.

“We don’t really listen about [being written off], we are quite honest towards ourselves," Lloris told Standard Sport. "We know we have a lot of quality like the other top teams in the League.

“As you know it is the most competitive League in the world and there are a lot of great teams and we’ve reduced the gap to them and that is the main thing.

“Now we are ready to compete against them and we will carry on because Tottenham has to stay at this level at least.

“Obviously with the new stadium something big is waiting for us and we cannot see this future without the Champions League, so [Sunday] was a good answer, a collective answer and we will keep working hard, believe me, with the manager we have got - he will be behind us.”

A trip to Stoke is next for Tottenham, before they welcome champions-elect Manchester City to the national stadium with revenge for the 4-1 defeat in December on the mind having lost just one - their opening home game of the season - Premier League game under the arch this term.
