Hugo Lloris tells Tottenham to treat Europa League campaign the same as the Champions League

Hugo Lloris has urged Tottenham to show the same attitude towards the Europa League as they would the Champions League.

Tottenham begin their campaign in Europe’s secondary club competition at Belgian club Gent tomorrow, the consolation prize after they were knocked out of the Champions League in the group phase.

In the past, Tottenham have rotated heavily in Europa League matches and have not perhaps treated it as seriously as they might. Yet captain Lloris insists this must change.

“In our mind it has to be like the Champions League,” he said.

“It is still a good competition to win and we are all ambitious. We want to go as far as possible and for that, we have to be focused, switch on our minds and be ready for a fight.

“Football is always about basics. Look at the Liverpool game (where Spurs lost 2-0 on Saturday): it’s not about tactics or technique.

"It was more about the spirit and, in a cup game, the spirit is the key.

“We are aware of the situation. We need to play at 100 per cent because our opponents will be ready to fight and compete against us.”
