Heung-min Son should NOT have been sent off for Andre Gomes tackle, readers say

Tottenham star Heung-min Son should not have been sent off for his tackle on Andre Gomes, Standard Sport readers say.

The South Korean was given his marching orders by referee Martin Atkinson, who had initially pulled out a yellow card only to upgrade upon realising the extent of Gomes's injury.

The Everton midfielder suffered a fracture-dislocation to his right ankle and is now not expected to return for the remainder of the season following surgery on Monday.

"It was clear it was never the intention of Son to create the problem that happened afterwards," Pochettino said. "It is unbelievable to see a red card.

Standard Sport readers appear to agree with the Spurs manager, and in their droves, with 79 per cent of those who voted in our poll said Son should not have been sent off.

In total, 5,838 people voted with just 1,220 backing the referee's decision to brandish a red card.

Everton captain Seamus Coleman consoled Son in the Tottenham dressing room after the game, with Sky Sports pundits Louis Saha and Tim Cahill describing the foul as "nothing intentional" and "so, so unfortunate."

Son had to be led off the pitch by club staff after becoming distraught by the damage to Gomes's ankle, with Dele Alli afterwards revealing that his team-mate could "barely lift his head up" in the dressing room because he was crying so much.

Spurs have offered Son professional counselling in the wake of the tackle, with Ben Davies telling reporters of the South Korean's fears people will think there was intent behind his tackle.

"It's about making him realise that he didn't go out there to hurt anyone," Davies said. "He thinks people may see that in him but it's not the case."
