Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock says Andy Johnson can rediscover his goalscoring touch after bringing the striker back to Selhurst Park on a short-term deal.

Johnson, 33, was a free agent after his release by Queens Park Rangers and has signed a contract until January. The striker hit 85 goals in 160 games during his first spell at the club between 2002 and 2006 but managed just two in 20 appearances at Loftus Road last term.

Warnock said: “I am delighted to be bringing in a player with Andrew’s experience and first and foremost he is here to score goals and I am sure he will get a chance to do that.”

Johnson said: “I would like to thank the gaffer for giving me this opportunity to come back to a club that I have a real soft spot for.”

Alongside manager Warnock, Johnson became the third former Eagle to return to the club this summer.

Former academy graduate and fans-favourite Wilfried Zaha arrived on loan from Manchester United last week, and scored Palace’s stoppage-time equaliser at Newcastle United on Saturday.
